Cloche Call

French hat designer Caroline Reboux created the bell-shaped cloche hat in 1908, although it is mostly associated with the 1920s. It was named after the French word for “bell.” The cloche hat was worn pulled down, so it resembled a helmet. The brims were very narrow and eventually disappeared altogether by the late twenties. The cloche hat looked better with short hair, and it inspired many women to cut theirs.

The cloche hat also had its own secret code. Pay attention to the styles with ribbons. If there was a bow, it meant the wearer was single. A knot meant she was married. An untied ribbon showed that the girl had given her promise of love.
